“Kel?” Raoul asked a third time, “Kel, what’s wrong?”
“How long has she been this way?”
“Buri?”
“Yes, Buri.”
Raoul paused, “A week.”
Kel’s mind reeled. What had she almost just done? What had she done? Even if Buri wasn’t… She couldn’t just barge in on their marriage. What had happened tonight… It was a fleeting fancy. Caused by proximity, by dancing, by raw desire—Stop that! She told herself. This was wrong. Fix it.
“Kel?”
She stared up at Raoul.
“What’s going on?”
“The King said what Buri had wasn’t contagious.”
“Yes.”
“And she’s been sick.”
“Yes.”
“Only in the mornings?”
“Yes. Kel, what—“
“And you said she told the Queen?”
Raoul sighed in exasperation, “I feel like I’m talking to Wyldon when he’s surprised about something. I’ve told you all that already. What’s going on?”
“Sir,” Kel said slowly, “How possible is it that Buri might be—with child?”
Raoul blanched, “Mithros.”
Then he fell off the bench.
