Kel loves Raoul in the winter, when he grows the stubble on his cheeks into a curly beard, and she loves the way his hair is frosted in streaks of silver when they ride too long in the freezing wind. She loves when the snow falls, when there are flakes in his eyelashes and she has to touch her nose against his just to see them clearly. Sometimes when she’s cold, he’ll hold her hand and he is always bursting with heat, like her own travelling fireplace, and she loves sitting close to him around the fire so that the warmth doesn’t end.
Behind her back the men wink at each other, and she pretends not to notice the way they subtly move aside to allow their commander and their unofficial captain seats next to each other. If Raoul knows, he doesn’t say anything, and she loves him for respecting her enough to keep them safely away from the bedrolls. She doesn’t sleep with him and he doesn’t sleep with her, but they steal kisses in the moonlight when the snow is falling and she loves him for his silence.
