When the autumn comes they are riding through Tortall, leisurely despite the oncoming snows and pretending that Kel may not be dead in only a scant few months. He takes her past some of his favourite places, though they never travel near his home fief Goldenlake. There are a thousand things that Raoul doesn’t say to her, but Kel knows them in her heart and she lets him keep quiet.
One windy afternoon they ride away from the road, horses picking their way over stones and through dips between the hills. She doesn’t ask where they’re going because she has learned to be patient and knows they must stop somewhere, and when the trees clear before a shaded, grassy clearing, she can’t help but gasp. The glade is circled by apple trees, and this late in the season they are large and ripe and waiting to be picked. Kel loves apples, especially later when she tastes them on Raoul’s mouth the very first time he kisses her.
