“Domitan?” a familiar voice asked. He turned slowly and looked toward the voice.
Keladry.
“Can I help you?” he asked.
Kel stood in the doorway awkwardly for a moment, then walked in. It was obvious Dom wasn’t going to invite her in.
“I talked to Shilleen,” she said. “I told her . . . a lot. She’s still so young, I don’t know how much she’ll absorb . . .”
The silence between them was a long one. Neither could look the other in the eye, neither one knew what to say to the other. So Kel started.
“I’m sorry,” she said.
“Excuse me?” Dom asked.
“For . . .” her shoulders slumped. “You sacrificed so much. And I didn’t even act like it mattered,”
Dom sighed.
“I’m sorry, too,” he said. “I should never have gone and done what I did with Lady Vienna,”
A curtain of silence dropped again.
“We both made mistakes, huh?” Keladry said. “You get so used to everyone going on and on about how wonderful and righteous you are that you kind of start to think it’s true,”
“Yeah, I guess you do,” Dom said smiling.
“I was wrong to marry you, Dom. To take you away from what you loved,” she told him.
“I wasn’t taken away Kel. I chose to go because I loved you,” he said. “I knew what it would be like being married to a Lady Knight. George warned me, but I ignored it. I truly though nothing could come between our love,”
They fell quiet again.
“I love you,” Kel said with tears in her eyes.
“I love you, too,” Dom said.
“Which is why I have decided to take a year off. Things between us aren’t right at the moment, and they need to be,” she told him. “Just say you want me to stay, and I will”.
Dom sat quietly staring at her intensely.
“Really? A year?” he asked.
“A year. We can even go outside of Tortall, so it would be that much harder for me to be gotten hold of,” she said enthusiastically.
Dom sat quietly for a moment. Then he got up, walked over to Kel, pulled her into a hug and said the word she had wanted to hear him say more than anything.
“Stay”.
