Her son was leaving for the Palace tomorrow. He was to train as a page, following in his mother’s footsteps.
“Can I go when I’m ten, mummy?” her daughter asked.
“We’ll see,” Kel answered non-committingly.
Shilleen watched her older brother finish packing.
“Write to us at least once a week,” Kel told Piers.
“Yes, Ma,” he said rolling her eyes.
“I mean it. We’ll worry about you,”
“What if your not home?” he asked innocently. “How do I write to you if your away?”
Kel was quiet and looked back at Dom for help.
“I’ll be sure she gets any letters, Piers,” he told his son.
“Well, I’m ready,” Piers said, looking down at his bags

“I think my brother is very disappointed. His son decided to become a priest, my other brother has had only daughters,” he told Kel that night as they prepared for bed.
“Um,” Kel said then laid down. She was quiet while Dom talked about his brothers children and how his son looked to be the only one who was going to become a knight.
“Do you still love me?” Kel asked suddenly.
“Huh? What? Why would you ask me that?” he asked, sitting up.
“I-” she fell quiet again.
“Kel?”
“Nothing. Good night,” she said, then rolled onto her side.

Dom watched Kel very carefully the next day. She was not riding to the Palace with their son because she was on a holiday and Dom didn’t want to risk her being coaxed into going off again. He wanted his wife to himself for a few months.
So Dom’s brother agreed to take him.
“Keladry?” Dom asked after everyone was gone, and it was just them standing there watching their son ride away.
“What?”
“Why did you ask me that last night?”
“Ask what?”
“You know what”.
Kel stared ahead silently.
“I had heard . . .” she stopped and looked at the ground, frowning.
“Heard what?” he asked, his heart pounding and a sick feeling uncurling itself in his stomach.
“That . . .” she pulled a lock of hair, then dropped her “Mask” into place. “That I had been replaced, I guess is a way to say it,” she said looking at him.
Dom’s heart stopped. She had found out about Lady Vienna. He should have known. He sighed and looked away.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
“No,” Kel said. “I’m sorry. I‘m not much of a wife, I know”.
Dom looked at her, then back down the road.
“I’m going to go to my parents place. I’m due to visit them. I’m wanting to take Shilleen. They haven’t seen her in a while . . .” again she drifted off. Her sentences had been doing that a lot lately. “When I return to Corus, I’ll see to it that it‘s ended. What a waste,” she said, shaking her head. Then she turned and walked away.
