Summary: Raoul talks to Dom about Kel’s marriage. Sequel to my Dom and Vanias for Round 2.
Dom looks morose as Raoul walks up to him, and he has the tinges of thought that the younger man will do something stupid. The same thoughts had run through his head before, and someone had done the same to him, before. His steps were silent, well learned of the bend and creak of the pine beneath him, and he joins Dom in looking across the barren wasteland of war that Steadfast rested upon. Dom doesn’t say a word, just turns his head away as a tear trickles along his cheek, highlighted by the moonlight.
“I didn’t expect this either.” He said, gently.
“That’s all anyone has said. Kel is not, for Mithros’s sake, so damned unpredictable.”
“She’s like a daughter to me. I didn’t expect this. If you’d told me she was going to marry Faleron, I would have laughed and laughed and accused you of slipping something in my drink, Dom.”
Raoul’s voice was less gentle, and reflected his own confusion and feelings of betrayal over being told of her engagement by a drunken sergeant. Dom doesn’t smile, even at Raoul’s chuckling. Raoul reaches out and slaps the back of his head, buffeting him forward.
“Chin up. Everyone needs to realise that Kel’s a big girl that’ll make her own mistakes.” Even him.
He turned around and walked away. He had two letters to send. One to Kel, to offer his and Buri’s belated congratulations. One to Douglass, to tell him it was time for Maura’s arrival at Court, at the exact time Third Company returned.
