Summary: Roald chooses his champion
“Roald asked me to be Champion.”
Kel let out a delighted gasp. “Oh, Owen! That’s wonderful news!”
“Is it?” he asked, searching her face for confirmation. His own face looked surprisingly pale and drawn. “I’ve been up all night thinking about it. I thought Roald would have chosen you – you’re the one who should be Champion, Kel! You deserve it.”
Kel chuckled, easily able to understand why he looked so wretched. “No more than you do, Owen, and probably a great deal less. You’re the sort of Champion this country needs. Somebody who will willingly give their last breath for this country, and for Roald. You’ll do him proud.”
He relaxed, his grey eyes calming. “I guess I’d better tell him I accept, then. I always thought you’d be the Champion, though, Kel.”
“Well, I’m glad it’s you,” Kel replied, smiling fondly at him. “You’d better go before he changes his mind.”
