Title: Squires 2
Rating: G
Length: 282
Competitor: Owen
Summary: It is time to watch their squires.
:::
Waiting for your squire to exit the Chamber of the Ordeal was always torturous for everyone, yet it was always dealt with differently. When Neal’s squire was in the Chamber he tried to be lighthearted. Neal tried to lift the gloomy cloud that seemed to be covering the entire Chapel, although he failed miserably. But it was obvious that he was exceedingly anxious, that worry was close to overflowing.
Kel kept to herself much more when it was her turn to wait. She didn’t converse with anyone and she kept her face completely blank. But when her squire came out, it became obvious how agonized she had been. Her relief was tangible and her pride evident.
But when it came time for Owen’s turn to face the Chamber doors, he couldn’t do it alone. Tears of terror coursed down his face, something Kel had not seen in a long time. She comforted Owen for what seemed like an eternity, both of them waiting for the doors to creak open. Owen told Kel that he was terrified that he had failed as a knight-master, that he never should have taken a squire. But the doors did creak open, and Owen’s squire did tumble out.
That night Kel celebrated with Owen. Owen celebrated that his squire was alright, but Kel celebrated that Owen was okay. Kel had known that Owen had done a fine job with his squire, teaching him everything that he knew. But Kel knew Owen well enough to understand that waiting for someone else to survive the Ordeal was just as difficult as the Ordeal itself. Owen cared more about others than himself, and that was what Kel loved about him.
