Kel, Owen and Neal had taken their horses out for a ride, and were galloping through the woods. Neal slowed his horse to a walk, and the others followed suit. Neal turned to them and said, “Now that we’re knights and the Scanran war is over, I’ve been thinking about getting a squire.”
Kel and Owen burst into laughter. “Y-you?” Kel stuttered, “With a squire? Owen’s better suited to be a knight-master than you are.”
Neal looked as if an idea had struck him. “You should get a squire, Owen,” he said.
Owen shook his head. “I’ll be a terrible knight-master,” he mumbled.
“No you won’t, Owen,” Kel soothed, “You’ll be a good knight-master. You’ll be kind to your squire, and you’ll teach him, or her, well.”
Owen still looked dubious. “I don’t know, Kel,” he said. She gave him a squeeze on the shoulder and Owen looked up at her. “Okay,” he said slowly, “but only if you get a squire too.”
Kel looked as if she was going to protest be then she said, “Deal.”
This time Neal laughed. “You’re not going to be much better than me!” he protested.
“Don’t listen to him,” Owen warned.
Kel looked over at Neal, who was still jerking slightly from laughter, and smiled. “Don’t worry. I never have.”
