Title: Silver & Gold
Rating: G
Length: 336
Competitor: Wyldon
Summary: Shedding a wedding ring is hard; donning a new one was unexpected.
It took him over a year to remove the gold wedding band he wore on his off-hand. His daughters had reacted in varied manners: Sunarine acted as though it was a betrayal of her mother; Eiralys said it was high time he took it off. Cathrea shrugged it off, and Margarry simply kissed him on the cheek and told him that whatever he wanted was what needed to be done.
And his hand felt strange. It was like having a different sword or lance to fight with – something felt very odd about it. He didn’t understand how one little ring could make that much difference in the weight and feel of his hand; a ring was something that weighted your heart and mind, after all.
But over time, like the weights he made his pages wear back in the day, he adjusted to the change. The small indentation at the base of his third finger gradually subsided, and a small part of him felt as though he was erasing history, removing the physical evidence of twenty seven years with Vivenne. Guilt was not a feeling Wyldon was accustomed to, though. He reasoned things away, looked for the rational – not the excuse – behind every event. He had regrets certainly, but did not give in to the luxury of self-centered misery that guilt offered.
Two years after that, he donned another wedding band. This one was silver, and more delicate than his first. His new wife slipped it over his blunt, calloused finger, easing it over the knuckles, and she smiled up at him, her hazel eyes sparkling with a vitality he loved and admired. And with this new ring, he felt a new weight on his heart – not a burden, but a responsibility to cherish her and take care of her, to trust that she would do the same for him. He loved the feeling of the metal against his fingers, changing the feel of everything he gripped – especially when it was Keladry’s hand that he held.
