Title: For Now
Rating: PG
Length: 341
Character: Owen
Summary: It’s never too late. Never.
A/N: I said I wasn’t going to write any more Owen for ONSW, but nostalgia dragged me back in. I had to say goodbye properly, especially after such a long writing spree. So here’s to the friendship we’ve formed, Owen. I’ve had a great time writing for you.
:::
Kel and Owen stood facing each other, staring into each other’s eyes. Kel was the first to break the silence. “So this is it,” she said slowly with a note of sadness.
Owen nodded somberly. “It is,” he said softly and opened his arms. She tumbled into them, burying her head on his shoulder. They relapsed into silence, simply enjoying each other’s company. Owen was being sent on a dangerous mission deep into Carthak and he was not expected to return for years, if at all. Kel had asked to join the company, but they did not need anyone else.
Owen had contemplated bowing out of the mission, as was possible for knights on such dangerous missions, but he knew Kel would disapprove. He knew how much duty meant to her, and he would hold that belief high, no matter how much it hurt him.
Owen wanted to lighten the mood, to make Kel feel better, but this matter was too serious for that. He was dying to say something, to express his feelings for her before it was too late. He wanted to tell her how much he loved being around her, how much he has enjoyed all these years together. He took a breath, but words came rushing out of Kel’s mouth before he could say anything.
“I love you, Owen,” she whispered, her eyes sparkling with rare tears.
“And I love you too,” he said just as softly, “But it’s too late.”
“It’s never too late. I’ll wait for you, Owen. No matter how long it takes.”
Owen slipped his hand into Kel’s, squeezing softly. “As will I,” he told her before kissing her gently. They stood there for a few moments, lips fitted together tenderly, reveling in the moment that had come too late, and yet at the perfect time.
Owen broke off the kiss reluctantly. “I have to go,” he told her and slipped his hand from hers. He hurried off into the distance, Kel staring after him as he disappeared from view, and her life.
