Title: Birthday
Rating: PG-13
Length: 335 words
Character: Wyldon
Summary: Kel finds the perfect present for an animal-lover with too much time on his hands.
“Happy birthday,” Kel whispered when he opened his eyes.
He buried his head in the pillows, groaning. “How long have you been awake?”
“Only a few minutes,” she said, grinning.
“You insist on assaulting me every year with birthday greetings, forgetting that old men don’t like being reminded of their age.”
“You’re not old.”
He lifted his head, raising his eyebrows.
“Well, you could certainly be older.”
“I’ve left active duty as a knight. One doesn’t get older than this.”
“Nonsense,” she said with a laugh. “There’s still dementia and infirmity in your future.”
“I can still joust better than you, Keladry.”
“Is that a threat?”
“Maybe.”
“Then maybe you won’t receive your birthday present,” she teased, kissing him lightly.
He wrapped his arms around her, dropping kisses on her collarbone. “What kind of present are you talking about?”
She pushed him away with a laugh. “Well, I was thinking of something other than sex,” she admitted. “Something you can do every day now that you won’t be called away for border patrols and such.”
“And you don’t mean sex?” he asked playfully.
“I mean falconry,” she replied. “I know you’ve always been interested in it, but never had the time to devote to it, since you can’t be parted from your falcon once you start. So when you’re fully awake, you can go out to meet your new companion.”
He sat up, his expression filled with wonder. “I don’t recall ever mentioning it,” he said, “but you’re right – I’ve always wanted to try my hand at it.”
“You told Owen once when he was your squire, and it was actually his suggestion. Be sure to thank him when he and Margarry come to dinner tonight.”
“I will,” he said, his hard mouth easing into a soft smile. “I love you, Keladry.”
“I love you, too,” she replied. “Do you want your other present now?” she asked, pressing herself up against him suggestively. His response assured her that he was, in fact, ready for it.
