Title: Make a Wish Rating: PG Length: 186 words Competitor: Owen Round/Fight: Final Summary: Owen thinks on what could have been. Based on the song Happy Birthday by Flipsyde.
-----
Happy birthday, Owen thought. Make a wish.
“You’re twenty-eight today,” Margarry said teasingly, brushing a curl off his brow. “Does that make you feel old?”
He smiled crookedly. “Gods, you have no idea,” he said. “Birthdays get weirder as I get older.”
He let her interpret that as she wished. She kissed his cheek and gazed at him with fond eyes.
“I had the cook make your favorite breakfast,” she continued. “Lots of bacon.”
“Good,” he said, “I’m starved.”
He did not have the heart to tell her he had no appetite; there was no reason in bringing it up now, when it would serve no purpose but to hurt. But birthdays held no charm, nothing but pain for him—because all he saw, in his mind, was the day exactly six years ago when Keladry bore his son, and relived the agony when he died two hours after his birth.
When one’s birthday is one’s child’s death-date, it’s an arrow struck through the heart.
Happy birthday, he thought, sending a silent prayer to his dead boy. I love you, whoever you would’ve been.

Oh, this hurts. But I love that he loves bacon.

Again with the sad but lovely... Also? "He smiled crookedly. “Gods, you have no idea,” he said. “Birthdays get weirder as I get older.”"Statement of truth.
