She pulled away from him, unsure whether she was bothered more by his confession of feelings or by the fact that she loved it so much. She could feel his pulse beneath her fingertips; his heart raced as much as hers did, and this both excited and terrified her.
“Kel, I love you,” he said, his voice low.
“We can’t, Owen,” she protested. “You have Margarry. And I’m not in the right place for a relationship.”
His face fell, and she was overcome with sadness. And guilt.
“Are you sure?”
With a sigh of regret, she nodded. “Positive. We shouldn’t.”
