Before becoming squire to one of the greatest knights in all the realm, Kel had not really experienced the thrill of living life completely. She had seen many places – had lived in the Yamani Islands and in Tortall – and she had seen many things – the attack by pirates on the Yamani temple, the attack by spidrens on the pitiful kittens in Mindelan – and had done many things herself – had fought bandits and immortals, had faced her fear of heights and rescued her maid.
And yet, she had never felt the wind on her hair as she sat on her horse atop a bluff overlooking a river basin, had never seen the warmth and gratitude of common when she’d stopped for only a moment to lend a quick and helping hand.
She had never been to the edges of the realm and or tilted in a tournament or raised a baby immortal without any prior knowledge. She hadn’t know what it was to be loved like a daughter by a man she’d only just met, or what it was like to have so much faith given her by the mentor of her dreams. He’d given her a chance to see what life truly was, and never did she regret taking it.
