Saying goodbye to her friends was one of the hardest things Kel ever had to do as a knight. She’d known these boys since she was ten years old, shy and quiet and desperate to prove herself. She’d trained with them for years, had served with them for years after, and had fought with them for even longer.
That they were all here now, on this, possibly one of the most important days of her life, spoke more strongly than she ever would have dreamed possible.
Owen was the first to hug her. “Don’t mind us,” he said cheerfully, patting her head as though she were a child. “Raoul’s a jolly sort – and it isn’t like you’re dying or anything. You’re just moving off to live in a different fiefdom, that’s all.”
Neal was the last to make his farewells. “If he treats you at all wrongly,” he warned, shooting a look past Kel at the man shaking hands with Piers of Mindelan, “then you just let me know. Let me know immediately.”
“I can take care of myself,” Kel said, trying for indignant but ending up with a watery protest. “I love him, but I love you too.”
