At first, Gareth wasn't sure if he'd had too much to drink. He rubbed the back of his neck, trying to remember whether he'd requested Timon have the candles in his rooms lit. He'd been working so hard the past few weeks that it was quite possible he had and had simply forgotten it.
"You're late," Roanna said, lightly reproving. "I hope you aren't doing too much. You know it isn't good for you."
"You're here?" and if his voice cracked slightly on the last word, it went unmentioned, as she beamed at him. "I thought the snow was surely going to be too much for you to get through."
She made a tutting noise as he crossed the room and pulled her into an embrace. "Really, Gareth. A little snow wasn't going to stop me. Not when the other prospect was spending Midwinter with your mother."
There were sounds of discontent from the crib as their son began to wake up. Gareth released Roanna to lift Gary up, finding his heir coated in dribble.
"Have you been looking after my ladies?" he asked gently, using a cloth from Roanna to wipe Gary clean.
"He's been looking after himself," Roanna put in fondly, sitting next to Gareth as he chose a space on their bed. "Screamed the place down when your mother attempted to arrange a marriage with young Roxanne of Haryse. She said later that she was only trying to make Lady Alina feel better about having such unattractive offspring."
Gareth snorted, freeing one arm to place around his wife. "I'm glad you made it here," he said roughly, closing his eyes. It would be his first Midwinter overseeing the Ordeals, something that weighed heavy on his soul.
She leaned against him, tickling Gary under his chin and smiling as he responded with a series of enthusiastic gurgles. "This will be the first of many Midwinters we spend together. How could I miss that?"
