Summary: Glaki isn't happy about leaving Discipline.
Discipline was full of colors and celebration, but for Glaki it was bittersweet. She still didn’t completely understand what it is that Lightsbridge could teach her beyond what she has learned at Winding Circle. Rosethorn just smiled and said that once she had something similar happen to her. Lark had woven her a new yellow silk scarf that Glaki used most often as a sash. It was a sign of everything that she had come from. Tris had tried to explain to Glaki about her mother, but it was Lark who truly helped her to understand the life of a yaskedasu. Glaki tried to be happy, for that was what was expected of her. She couldn’t help the feeling that she was once again leaving behind a family. Even if it wasn’t murder but her studies that were going to separate them this time. Sure Tris and Niko had wandered, but they were mages. Wandering was what mages seemed to do best. She knew they were looking out for her in their own way. Lark and Rosethorn had always been there, so she had never truly been lonely before. She couldn’t even take Bear with her because pets weren’t allowed in the dormitories. Plus, he was too old for that kind of travel. He had earned a retirement of the younger students at discipline scratching his ears while he basked by the fire. It seemed weird to realize that she was the oldest student there, when she had been so very young when she first moved in.
Glaki looked across the small cabin to where the younger students were basking in awe at the presence of Tris and her brother and sisters. She thought that they would be used to them by now, but she guessed that celebrity worship took some time to get over. Actually, she realized that Daja wasn’t there, and looked over to notice that the woman had come over to her, “You okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine.”
“If you say so,” Daja replied, but to Tris she said, ”Come over here. Your little prodigy seems a little overwhelmed by this party in her honor.”
Excusing herself from the group, Tris came over to where Daja and Glaki were standing. “Come on Glaki. Let’s go talk.”
“Okay,” The younger girl had said in response as the two silently slipped out the back door. They made their way up onto the wall surrounding Winding Circle. It was where the two always went when they needed to talk without interruption. The wind on the wall meant they were able to get a level of privacy from anyone who didn’t scry the wind if they were careful, and from force of habit, they always were.
Glaki couldn’t figure out what Tris could have to say. They had spent hours talking about what Lightsbridge would be like after Glaki had found out that she was being sent there to complete her studies. Niko had even sent a very nice letter about what her experience would likely be like including the fact that it probably wouldn’t hurt to name drop from time to time (this was something that Tris had discouraged, of course). Glaki had never asked how Niko had found out about this change; she didn’t want to know the answer.
Tris turned to her friend, student, sister, and asked, “Are you nervous?”
“No, why would I be?”
“Because you are leaving your friends, your family, your home. You are going to a place that half the people are here hate as an isolationist ivory tower. You will be alone for the first time in your life. Do I need to keep going?”
“No,” Glaki said bowing her head.
“Good. Now are you nervous?”
“Terrified.”
Tris smiled at that which confused Glaki even more. “That’s more like it. Look at me, okay? I promise everything will be okay. You are the most smart, talented young mage I have ever met. You have been through more in your life than most people go through in a lifetime. University will be a walk in the park for you. And if it isn’t I’ll come, and we can figure something out together.”
“Promise?”
“ Promise. Now we should probably get back to that party of yours. I know that a lot of people put a lot of work into it.”
