They had been riding for hours in the biting cold. Each gust of wind piercing straight through their armor and padding, and chilling each body to the bone.
“We better make camp now before it gets too dark.” Lady Keladry murmured to the sergeant mounted on the horse next to hers.
They had been riding for days trying to reach the capital before the passes closed, the men of both companies all had people they wanted to be with for midwinter waiting for them.
“I do believe you’re right.” Dom said before giving signals to his men to make camp within the shelter of a wooded area. It wouldn’t provide the best relief from the wind, but it was better than nothing.
Kel gave the same signals to her men before turning to Dom, “I’m going to go and help gather some dry wood for the fires.”
Dom smiled, “I’ll accompany you; work is always tedious when it’s done alone.”
Kel laughed at Dom’s definition of work, but let him come along regardless.
The two of them spent at least an hour searching for dry wood and then piling the branches onto the sled they had brought with them. The moon was bright in the sky overhead before the set back to camp with their load.
“I can’t wait to be back at the palace,” Kel remarked.
“Why? Do you have a sweetheart that I don’t know about?” Dom chuckled, with a slightly serious undertone.
“No, my family will be there this year. Although I’m sure you have plenty of ladies awaiting your arrival.”
At this Dom’s grin grew, “Maybe, but I don’t really fancy court ladies.”
Kel gave him a sly grin, “Really now? Then what sort of ladies do you prefer? Or is it men that you like?”
Dom gave an indignant sound, but before he could come up with a reply of his own it began raining sleet upon their heads.
“Oh! Great Merciful Mother!” Kel swore.
The rain bit through their clothing as they tried to cover their heads and ran, their progress slowed by the burden on their sled.
Finally they were able to duck under the boughs of a large tree with low branches. It would be awhile before the rain soaked through this old tree.
Kel sighed, knowing that they would be stuck here for quite awhile she began fixing up a fire so that they could warm themselves.
“This tree feels, I don’t know, mystical?” Dom laughed at his own comment before helping Kel.
They settled down next to the fire, huddling together to keep warm against the bitter cold.
“So as I was saying, I don’t prefer court ladies anymore, and certainly not men.”
Kel raised an eyebrow, “Really? Then who does catch the eye of the great Domitan of Masbolle?”
Dom smiled and leaned in close to Kel, making her very aware of how close his lips were to her.
“Well,” he whispered into her ear, “I rather like the Lady Knight variety.”And with that he pressed his grinning lips to hers.
Somewhere in the heavens the Great Mother was laughing at all the things that seemed to happen under her tree.
