Title: Sitting In A Tree
Rating (and Warnings): PG
Prompt: #9 Trees
Summary: fluff fluff fluff. In a tree.
Notes: Kel seemed like an obvious place to start for this prompt Plus, I think this is the first time I've ever written Kel/Dom.I kind of like it.
"Kel, what in Mithros' name are you doing?"
She recognised his voice, but craned her neck down to make sure. Dom stood at the base of the tree, hands planted on hips, looking up at her with confusion. He looked cute when he was confused.
Readjusting her grip on the branch above her, she managed to lower herself so that she was sitting down. It wasn't very comfortable, but she wasn't planning on living up here. "I'm climbing this tree," she called down to him. She thought she saw him roll his eyes, but it was difficult to see from this distance.
"Kel, would you please come down," he called up to her. She considered it for a moment, before replying, "No, you'll have to come up!"
She saw him throw his hands up in the air and walk out of sight. She shrugged, and stood up carefully. Only a few more metres and she could head back down.
It had been a long time since her problem with heights had bothered her, but it was better safe than sorry. She could not afford to freeze in front of her squad. Although, she reasoned, as a Sergeant she would probably send someone else to scout up a tree. That was beside the point though; there was no sense in being afraid of heights, whether she came into contact with them or not. It was an unreasonable fear - actually, it was a very reasonable fear, the smart part of her brain interjected - and she intended to conquer it. Or at least smother it a little.
A sound from below caused her to look down. Dom was trying to navigate the lower branches of the tree, his tunic gone and his shirtsleeves rolled up in an I mean business manner. She shook her head, resumed her uncomfortable seat, and waited.
After a few long minutes, he was beside her, panting heavily and standing unsteadily on a branch. Kel tried not to think about the long drop to the ground as he swung himself around to sit next to her, causing the branch to creak unpleasantly. At least when she climbed a tree she had the sense to be careful.
"Why do you keep doing this?" Dom asked, trying to steady his breathing. He looked flustered from the climb, and Kel had to look away when she realised she was staring at his heaving chest.
"It helps with my fear of heights," she answered. "And it takes a fair bit of skill, too."
"I noticed," he said wryly. She smiled.
"Anyway," he said suddenly, "The reason I was looking for you - your company will be moving out next week, I've just been to see Raoul. Fifth will follow soon after."
Kel nodded. She had expected that, but not so soon. After there had been a number of skirmishes at the border last summer, the Own had been back and forth nonstop. Her company was more than ready for some action though.
Dom sighed. "Well, I've still got to go tell Fifth, so I'll see you at dinner." He moved to climb back down, but Kel grabbed his shirt, "Wait. When will you be leaving?"
Dom shrugged and smiled. "Who knows. It depends if the situation gets worse, or whatever takes Raoul's fancy. It could be tomorrow, or the next day, or two weeks from now."
Kel bit her lip, thinking. Dom didn't move, since her hand was still clenched in the front of his shirt. At least, that's what he told himself was the reason. It had nothing to do with the way she was looking at him. Nothing to do with that. At all.
His body seemed to move without his brain telling it to. Leaning forward, he carefully pressed his lips to hers, one arm moving to hold on to her as much as to keep him from falling off the branch. Kel made a soft, happy sound against his mouth, and Dom thought he would happily stay in this tree forever.
Eventually, though, they parted. Kel smiled shyly, which was strange after seeing her so sure of herself in front of her men, so in control and firm. He couldn't help bit grin back at her, and rush forward to plant one last kiss on her mouth, before making his way back down through the maze of branches.
Kel watched him, heart racing frantically, a smile plastered on her face, "Don't fall on the way down!"
