Title: Pirate Killer
Rating : PG
Word Count: 509
Summary: Verdis contemplates the effects a young weather mage could have on his navy.
Notes: I wanted to look at Verdis as commander.
When Duke Verdis read the note that had been sent to him from Winding Circle, all he could think was that he was glad that his great niece’s redheaded friend was on their side. Well, that and that she had a flair for the dramatic. Maybe that wasn’t fair. It was well known that young mages often lose control when they get upset, and Sandry had written to say that Tris had just been mad about the way the pirates had treated her favorite cousin. True she had known she was a mage for less than a year, but this was the second time one of her waterspouts had affected him personally. For all that Verdis liked the young weather mage, he couldn’t help but worry about how it could affect his navy.
Verdis had built up his navy to be one to be rivaled while wearing its command as naturally as the clothing Sandrilene would surely make one day. It was the best this side of the endless sea. He used it to protect his land from pirates, and now this girl nearly destroyed a good part of his ships. Ships that had his men on them. Some of those were admirals he knew by name, while others were lowly sailors, but their loss would have been felt by him as well. Perhaps, he took the management of his navy (and his lands in general) too personally. Alas, such a loss would have been devastating not only to him, but to all of Emelan as well. He was the one who had been the pirate killer protecting his land for years sending his ships here and there. Now he was growing old, though, and Tris was young. She was young, and she could handle forces that would give anyone else nightmares. Niko had said that she wanted to gain better control over her powers, but he hadn’t said what for claiming that it was up to his student to make such decisions. Verdis just hoped it was to prevent such dramatic uses of power.
He knew that other rulers had battle mages, yet he was old fashioned. He liked the strategy of controlling a strong armada, telling which ships to go where in what formation. Long gone were the days when he could sail with his ships, feeling the wind on his face. Those days ended when he took the title following his father’s death, but he could still give the orders from within the citadel. If he needed a mage to help him fight, he could always visit Skyfire over at Winding Circle. It was in their interest to keep Summersea and the rest of Emelan safe. He knew what they could do, and he knew what Tris could do. Verdis hoped that if Tris ever wanted to take up battle magic, that he could pay her price, because he wouldn’t want to have to command his navy to take down one of his niece’s closest friends.
