Title: Reputation
Rating: G
Word Count: ~285
Summary: A conversation between the Knight Commander and his Captain. Plus slightly shady reference to Whiteford's past.
Notes: I'm feeling the Flyndan love right now. ;D
“This won’t end well and you know it.”
Raoul sighed and looked up from his paperwork. His second in command stood in the doorway, arms crossed across his chest, a sour look upon his face. “You need to lighten up, Flyn.”
“No, I don’t,” said Flyndan. “Someone has to think about these things – about the consequences – and since you’re obviously not going to do it, that leaves me.” His fists clenched noticeably where he had them tucked under his arms, and Raoul could tell he was holding himself back.
“We’ve discussed this before. Everything will be fine,” said Raoul.
Flyndan snorted. “Everything will be fine. Do you have any idea how the men are going to react to this? How the King will react to this?”
“I’ve already told Jon. He agreed to it.”
Raoul watched as the other man’s jaw clenched. “Well, I don’t like it,” he ground out eventually. “Jonathan may be able to forgive and forget, but others won’t. You can’t say you haven’t been warned, Raoul, when everything goes downhill.”
“Noted.”
Flyndan uncrossed his arms and shook his head, looking genuinely concerned for a brief moment. “This Eldorne lad won’t make it into the Own. Not in one piece. He’s filth. I still don’t see why you’re giving him a chance.”
Raoul knew as well as anyone what the boy would be facing. He had spent four days arguing with Jon about it: he knew what was on the line. Accepting Eldorne into the King’s service might look bad, but not accepting him would look even worse. Raoul looked at his second in command, at his withheld anger, and allowed himself a small smile. “I gave you a chance, didn’t I?”
