Title: Jealousy
Rating: PG
Words: 494
Warnings: Same-sex pairings.
Summary: Alex hadn't known until the boy had come.
Alex of Tirragen didn’t know when it had started. They had been friends for a while and when he thought back on it, it was inevitable. Maybe it had started when the fiery boy, Alan, had arrived. At the very least, that was when he really noticed it. Gary had decided to sponsor the boy Alan, and Alex had suddenly become a monster in his own mind. It took him a while to realize that it was jealousy. He was jealous of the boy Alan.
He was jealous because he loved Gary. Gary, his best friend. Out of all the men to love—Jon, Raoul, even Alan—he loved Gary. Gary was the one he’d known before all the others. He had met him when Gareth had first started teaching him the way of the sword, when Krimin of Tirragen had moved to Court. Gareth—loud, funny, and rambunctious—had easily befriended Alex—quiet, sneaky, and dark. Only when they started page training did they befriend Jon and Raoul, but it was Gary and Alex that had first declared their dislike of Ralon. Their relationship had been perfect, idealistic.
And then Alan of Trebond had come. That small, fiery, purple-eyed fiend. Alex hated him as soon as he laid eyes on him. He knew something was wrong. But Gary liked him. He took him under his wing, became his friend. Alex wanted to object—warn his friends that Alan was a menace—but he couldn’t do anything when Gary liked him so much. He didn’t want to hurt him, and he certainly didn’t want to test their friendship. But this did nothing to lessen his own hate.
When Roger of Conté came to the palace, Alex loved him too. He sometimes felt embarrassed that he loved men when the rest of his friends loved females, but he quickly came to terms with it. He knew that there had to be other people like him, and that he would not be alone forever. Maybe Gary would realize… he never allowed himself to finish the sentence. If Gary was like him, he would realize it eventually, but if he wasn’t, then he would not ruin their friendship to force his love upon him.
But he did not love Duke Roger like he loved Gary. For Gary, it was quiet and almost painful… for Duke Roger, it was passionate, and all he wanted was to assist him. And he and the Duke had something in common—they both hated Alan. With Gary, he had to be Alan’s friend. But with the Duke, Alex could show his true feelings—and he could help the Duke with his mission. He didn’t care that the Duke wanted to become King. He didn’t even care that he planned to kill Jon. All he cared about was Alan. All he wanted to do was murder the fiery boy and reveal his malevolence to Gary. And then he and Gary would be together…
