Lord Wyldon of Cavall looked up from his paperwork as someone knocked on the door of his office. “Come in,” he called, finishing off the rest of his sentence before putting his quill back in the inkpot.
He looked up, and rose as Baron Piers entered the room. Wyldon gestured for him to sit down. The baron had an air of force about him, and the dreamy hazel eyes that were so like his Keladry’s, were glittering with awareness. And for all his composure, it was clear he was anything but. Lord Wyldon waited for Piers to sit before taking his own seat. He was a little surprised to see the Baron, even though it was clear that this wasn’t just a social visit. Yet there was no reason for Piers to be visit him unless...
“I hear that you and my daughter have been... seeing each other.” That spark in his eyes was most definitely anger, Wyldon decided, coolly returning the Baron’s gaze. Wyldon nodded, acknowledging the other man’s statement. “Have you considered Keladry in any of this? You have daughters older than she is. Surely you do not think this is appropriate?”
Lord Wyldon considered his words carefully. “That is irrelevant. What Keladry and I feel for each other –”
“What do you feel for her?” Piers interrupted him, the tone in his voice almost a challenge.
“I care for her deeply. I love and respect her.”
He regarded Wyldon for a moment. “Those are pretty lies, Lord Wyldon. Is that what you used to seduce her?”
“If you are implying that I –”
“I am not implying it, I am stating it. You took advantage of your position over her to convince her to bed you. What was it you said the day Keladry first came to the palace? That girls start young? How early did you start with her?” The light clip to his voice was the only true indicator of his fury, although the spark in his eyes had turned into a blaze.
Wyldon was incensed by the accusation, but fought to remain calm. “I will not tolerate such insult, Baron Piers. I care for your daughter, but I would never have betrayed Vivenne in any way. My relationship began long after I lost any power over her.”
“And what of your insult? To Keladry, and her family? You show no respect for her, or her honour and virtue. You treat her as if she were some common whore to be had behind closed doors and I am to believe you love her?”
“I offered her marriage, but she refused.” It sounded weak, even to him. But it was all he had to respond with, even after all the arguments in his mind on the very same subject.
“Then you shouldn’t have bedded her. She is young and inexperienced in the ways of love. You are older and should have known better. If you truly respected her, you would have thought of her honour and reputation, instead of taking advantage of her. You claim to have offered her marriage, yet you have never come to ask me for permission to speak with her of such things.” Piers paused for a moment before continuing. “Although I suspect I would be correct in assuming that your offer was only given after you had bedded her.”
Wyldon looked down, suddenly unable to meet the Baron’s eyes. His silence was all the reply Piers needed.
“I think you have made your lack of respect for my daughter quite clear. As such, I find it hard to believe that you care for Keladry, much less love her.” He looked at Wyldon coldly. “You will end this Wyldon. And I will find a more suitable match for Keladry.” With that, Baron Piers strode out of the room, leaving Lord Wyldon with a heavy heart.
