It should be an easy thing to accomplish. Her hands though, are slippery with sweat and she tries to breathe calmly, meditatively, but she feels the heat on her face, her cheeks aglow as though she has overapplied rogue, her lips bright as though with lip paint due to the worrying of her teeth. Any other Court lady could, she knows that, has seen enough men fall to a fluttering eyelash or a coy backstep on a trailing hem, but this is different. She’s spoken to men well enough before, him especially, but as risqué as the Namornese court is, this just feels especially presumptuous. She knows that it shouldn’t feel that way, she’s felt the lingering glances on her curves followed by the regretful sigh before, she’s watched the men eye Caidy as she instead walks over to Rizu in a perfectly tailored gown, she knows that she is desirable. But there is a line between desire and what she intends to do. Blatant proposition. It’s flattery, the more sensible part of her mind says, flattery, that she’s chosen him out of all of the others. The rest of her feels it to be stupidity, but then she knows that that half speaks with too much fear.
But it is Caidy’s birthday. And she wants to do something special. They have been lovers for the past eight months, and she has not had a single regret, thankful for every scant and not so scant moment. That this will address the possibility of Caidy’s regret is a factor she chooses not to think of.

She finds him on the sheltered practice courts, bow strung tightly. She watches from a distance as he takes his stance and fires into the mound of hay bales, and she smiles in appreciation as he hits the painted circle repeatedly. He unstrings his bow and walks over to the target, tugging the arrows out and refilling his quiver. He looks up and sees her, waving a hand with a smile. She shivers slightly, partially in nerves and in the chilly air, and he picks up his overcoat, placing his quiver with his bow.
“It’s a bit cold for you to be out here, isn’t it, Rizu?” He calls, smiling charmingly as he walks.
“It’s still a bit warm.” He shakes out his coat and offers it to her, and she shakes her head. He smiles ruefully and settles it around her shoulders.
“Thankyou.”
“I’m guessing you didn’t come out here to exchange pleasantries about the weather.” He laughs, and she smiles in return.
“I have, a sort of favour to ask. Not really a favour as such because I personally can’t really, wouldn’t really be well comfortable with, want to pay you back myself for doing, but something I want you to do. Would like you to do, for me, with me, if you’re willing.”
“I’d be happy to do anything you asked, Rizu. That’s what friends are for.”
“Please don’t say that when you don’t know what I’m asking. I know that we’re friends, but this could maybe screw up our friendship and hurt someone we both care about if this goes wrong and I’m afraid that it will and this is just too foolish of me to ask you, I’m sorry.” Her hand grabs the edge of the coat and she tugs it off her shoulder, but Jak’s arm blocks her movement, his hand warm around her wrist.
“Slow down. And then tell me what you want me to do. I’d be happy to do it, for you and for Caidy.”
“I can’t ask. I can’t, Jak, it’s far too presumptuous of me. It’s for Caidy, but it’s a surprise.”
“But it hopefully involves me.”
“Yes.”
“And you.” Rizu stamps her foot softly, her face creased in annoyance.
“Yes.”
“And Caidy.”
“Yes. Jak, it’s fine. Forget I said anything, please.”
“All of us together?” He watches her face carefully, and when she closes her eyes and her face colours further, he smiles in amusement.
“Yes. I’d be happy to.” Her eyes snap open, and he grins teasingly. “Did you think I’d say no?”
She grits her teeth. “No. Are you sure? Absolutely, positively, not backing out sure?”
“Yes.” He winks teasingly at her, taking a hand in both of his, and covering it. He kisses her hand and she sighs.
“Thankyou.” She whispers, and smiles softly.
“Anytime.” He whispers back, and she hits his arm, her fingers lingering for a second too long.

The night of Caidy’s birthday arrives, and, as befitting their inclusion into Berenene’s inner circle, she hosts a ball for the Anderran ambassador and makes heavy mention of Caidy’s birthday throughout the night. Caidy is easily the belle of the ball, and she glows with happiness, and floats around the hall in what Rizu thinks is quite easily her best-designed piece. She pleads feeling unwell shortly before the midnight bell, and the nerves quivering in her stomach do well to cover her lie. Jak also pleads a migraine and offers to escort her to her room, Caidy’s room, and she smiles reassuringly at Caidy’s concern. They arrive at Caidy’s room and Jak walks around, lighting candles scattered around, and the flickering light is then all the light in the room. She sits on the bed and pats a spot next to her, and Jak sits down, kicking off his dark dress boots.
“She shouldn’t be long.” She says quietly, and jak’s chuckle vibrates through the covers.
“Is this an assignation you’ve performed before? I’ll have to watch out for it in the future.”
“We haven’t!” Jak chuckles louder, and she elbows him in the side. “We haven’t! She was already tired, and would use me to make her excuses.”
“If you’re sure.”
“Of course I’m sure.”
“You’re also nervous, Rizu.” He takes her hand and squeezes it, and she looks up at him with a grateful smile.
“Are you?” He shrugs, and tucks a piece of hair back into her intricate bun. She smiles and moves her hand to his cheek, kissing his cheek.
“You’re a good man, Jak.”
He smiles slowly back at her, and leans closer to her, hesitantly. He brushes his lips slowly across hers, and she flinches slightly, her hand slipping to his shirt collar and holding him in place.
“Riz?” Caidy’s voice sounds throughout the room, and they pull away from each other, turning towards the door. Caidy looks stunned, her eyes filled with hurt, and she feels herself starting to stammer an explanation, when Jak instead stands and takes Caidy’s hand, tugging her towards him and kissing her softly. Caidy rests her hand against his chest and pushes, and Jak moves back.
“I – I – I don’t understand what’s going on.” Caidy’s eyes dart between Rizu, Jak and the candles.
“Am I interrupting some assignation between you two? In my room for the thrill of being caught? I didn’t think you were like that, Rizu. I thought you were a better man than that, Jak.”
“Caidy.” She walks towards her, taking her hands. Caidy looks too hurt, and she shakes her head at the voice telling her she knew this would end badly. “Caidy, no. I love you. I’m with you. Jak is helping me do something, for you. A surprise.”
“Rizu came to me because she wanted to make your birthday special. Wanted to do something special, for you, for your birthday. She asked me if I would be willing to help her do something special for you, and I agreed. I kissed Riz because she was nervous, and she didn’t need to be. And if she was nervous, it was only going to make things more awkward, later on. “ Jak puts a hand on each of their shoulders, smiling reassuringly at Caidy.
“Later on?” Caidy rises an eyebrow, but her face has softened while her eyes still question.
“Later on.” She smiled. “I know that you said you were happy with me, just me, and I wanted to do something special. So tonight, you have both of us.”
“Both of you?” Caidy’s eyes flickered between them, smiling slowly, and Rizu wrapped her arms around her, kissing her deeply.
“Both of us.”
“Together.” Jak added with a cheeky grin, sliding his arms around their waists. Rizu breathed a sigh of relief as Caidy tilted her head back and laughed, and Rizu happily joined in.
