Summary: Alanna reflects.

There is a weight on her chest and Alanna doesn’t open her eyes, terrified to face her friends on the morning of her big page exams. She knows what might happen, and she knows that even if she passes her exams they might think her the fraud she really is, and she breathes heavier and wishes she hadn’t started this lie in the first place.

Sighing, she expels the breath from her lungs in a whoosh. The weight on her chest lifts, then resettles, directing a smelly yawn right into her face.

“Get moving,” orders Faithful. “I want your pillow.”

Err... I hope this doesn't come across the wrong way, but the page examinations were created by King Roald *after* Alanna was revealed to be a girl (to prevent people accusing any future page of cheating). /canon dork.

I loved the feeling of Alanna's anxiety... it had me trying to breathe harder when I was reading it. And then it was Faithful
I thought they still had examinations, they were just not made public until after Alanna, right? I could be so wrong though... (Not really knowledgeable about SotL canon )

Val, I will gladly admit that I've only ever read SotL once, and that was about six years ago, so I was going solely off (very poor) memory Thanks for enlightening me, though - I will definitely take better care (or perhaps reread one/all of the quartets) in the future!

Ooh, you should definitely reread SotL! It's awesome.

And I think knowing how the characters (Alanna, Jon, George, Gary, Raoul etc) were when they were younger adds extra value to the later books.

I started my SotL reread today (funny how six years later, you start to notice things ) so I'm gearing up for some real (and hopefully accurate!) Alanna-days drabbles!
