It's incongruous, of course, how quickly one's life can change.
The soul healer says this is what he has been struggling with since his mother died - he wants to argue, say: I barely even remember her; but then, that isn't what he's paying for - and that until he learns to accept such transience, he will continue to fall under the shadow of Gyonxe.
She'd told him not to meet Rosethorn and Evvy when they came into port, though, too, which probably just goes to show what that bleater knows.
Because when she steps out into the light, face framed by her perennial headscarf, the light glossing her skin a rich, honey gold, something in him tightens.
He knows that she is his, because she always has been: but when she comes down the gangway and into his arms, standing on tiptoe with the smell of ozone in her hair, the air is suddenly brighter in his lungs, in a way it hasn't been in a long, long time.
'I missed you.'
'You won't be rid of me that easily, Briar Moss.'
And he can't imagine ever wanting to be.
Stay still long enough and you will feel the earth turn beneath your feet.
