Title: Paying Respects
Rating: PG-13
Prompt: same but different
Category: up to 250 words
Word count: 242
Summary: Eleanor is sure she would have been a better knight than Madeline of Silverbrook. The only problem is, girls aren't allowed to try for their shields anymore. Takes place about a year after I Am Still Here.
Eleanor of Deerhorn sank to her knees in front of her brother’s grave, laying the flowers she had brought at the foot of the stone. Madeline of Silverbrook, a former lady knight stripped of her title, was buried to the right of Christopher. His mother Marie had requested his fiancé be buried there, but Eleanor had brought no flowers for Madeline. She had revered her in life, and longed to emulate her, but all Eleanor felt for her now was cold disdain.
I thought she liked me, Madeline murmured, observing the small eleven year old.
She wanted to be a Lady Knight too, Christopher replied.
She liked me while I lived.
That was before Lady Knights were outlawed, darling. She feels that it’s your fault they were.
Unreal tears rolled down Madeline’s cheeks. It is.
Eleanor rose from the ground, ignoring the dirt on her black mourning dress. Unexpectedly she stopped in front of Madeline’s grave.
“Mother’s sending me to the convent,” she murmured. “She would have let me be a page, but now I can’t and there’s nothing else for me to do.” Tears were falling, but the girl seemed unaware. “I would have been a good knight,” Eleanor said harshly. “I would have been better than you. I wouldn’t have gotten him killed and doomed all noble ladies to empty lives and arranged marriages. I would have been a Lady Knight like you, but I would have been so different.”
