Title: Stealth
Rating: PG-13, for language (nothing worse than what's in Bloodhound)
Prompt: #2, Walk the Line
Category 250 words and under
Word count: 250
Summary: Clary has a decision to make.
Note: This is set when Clary is younger, before she's partnered with Mattes. Contains really minor Bloodhound spoilers.
Clary looked from the handful of silver nobles in her hand to her partner, not releasing her grip on the Rat at all.
Fletcher rolled his eyes. “Well? Make your mind up, dozy bitch.”
“Don’t you dare-“
“Oh, I will dare. I’m your senior partner, you’ll show me respect.”
Clary gritted her teeth and glared. It was times like these that she remembered how much she hated him, even if he did give good advice.
You deserve to have more money. It’s a dangerous job, and you should have nice things. I don’t want a sarden underfed weakling as my partner.
Clary’s fingers closed around the coins, feeling the cool metal on her skin, but her mind wasn’t finished with throwing Fletcher’s advice at her.
Don’t take bribes too often – especially if you don’t follow through with them. You’ll get a reputation and end up with a knife buried in your back. It’s all about how carefully you walk the line.
Fletcher’s beady eyes were greedily fixed on the money, but Clary had no intention of letting this Rat walk free. Fletcher had no right to the money anyway; he’d done nothing to help.
Clary sighed and shoved the money back into the Rat’s belt purse. “You’re coming with us.”
As they led the hobbled Rat away, Clary’s fingers brushed against the three coin-shaped lumps in her pocket. Fletcher was wrong, she decided. It wasn’t about how carefully you walked the line; it was about how sneakily you crossed it.
