What she misses when he isn't there is the way he touches her. The avaricious examination of her neck and back and hipbones. Stretching out her fingers, running his mouth over the scar tissue covering most of her frame (and she does feel like an enormous scar, somedays, when he isn't there to tell her otherwise, and the fanciful part of her - heightened by her exposure to him - counts up every battle, every training session she pays for in blood) the way his hands - reaching out to cup her chin in the dark - are cool (contrast to the warmth of his mouth, the furnace of his body) and reverent and lovely.
The way, when it comes for her in the night - the yellow eyes, the ghosts who tell her who they are, and how they died, and if it was too sudden to realise or if they lingered long in the twilight - he takes her in his arms and says her name until she comes back to him.
And she looks into his eyes - a colour that exists outside of him only in the first soft weeks of the long ago spring when she came to the palace and he defied a century - and knows in her bones that this is the only way it ever could have been between them.
Is.
Will be.

I have small suspicions as to the pairing, and any way I look at it, I love it. The writing flows beautifully and is so magnificently haunting. Terribly lovely.

This wouldn't have existed if you hadn't written Higher Now. I read that and it made this fall into my head. So I'm super glad you liked it ;D
