Jonathan’s face is bland as he surveys the man before him. “You are overreacting.”
Roger is red with rage. “He tried to kill me! I am a Conte – this is treason!”
Jonathan’s mouth curves into a mocking smile. “Surely you - of all people - are not advocating the punishment of someone on the grounds of treason?”
Roger clenches his fists. “I told you, I was set up!”
“Yes, by your former squire. Who, you are now claiming, is trying to kill you.” Jonathan sounded bored. “I’ll have someone look into it. In the meantime, you should probably confine yourself to your rooms. We don’t want to, ah, incite any more people to make attempts on your life, do we?”
Roger leant over the desk. “You are my King, and you owe me protection,” he snarled.
Jonathan glared at him, eyes as hard as sapphires. “You were my cousin, and you owed me love.” He leant back in his chair. “I guess neither of us are terribly good on our word, are we?”
