The darkness is sharp and sad. It has been months since Clary passed and he cannot bear to let go. He lies awake in the cold bed, alone but for the shadows on his wall. He counts the nights as they race by; nights without Clary.
It seems like a dream, then, when she silently comes to him and slips between the study cotton sheets. For a few hours, things are almost like they were; she smells the same, and her hair is soft. The sadness in her eyes though, is new.
His heart pulls as he realises that Clary’s daughter will never be her mother, as much as they both ache for her to be. Their love isn’t the love of comrades, the way his old partner’s had been. This is bittersweet and raw, passion wrought from their grief for a woman they both need.
When Little leaves, he finds the courage to read the letter Clary gave him long ago. In case something happens, she had said. But as he finally reads the lines, the letter drops from his grasp, onto the floor.
Where he should feel elated at the gift Clary bore him, Mattes just feels destroyed.

If I ignore the Clary-dying bit, this is hilarious! I could actually see Little/Mattes happening, and then imagining the look on his face when he finds out she's his daughter would be priceless.
