Title: Friends Rating: PG Prompt: Villain Category: 250 words Word Count: 250 Summary: For Goldenlake Drabble Tournament. Alex doesn’t think he’s good for anything.
Alex had never been good for anything in their eyes. Some help with mathematics, a laugh with Gary – where had his closeness with Gary gone? When had it stopped being Gary and Alex as the jokesters, why was it always now Gary and Raoul, for everything? They even viewed Alan’s cat as being one of their little group, more than what he was. His squire could be with them, Geoffery, and was untainted by his acquaintance with Alex. But he couldn’t.
And the worst part was, he couldn’t just blame this on Roger. Everyone else had prizes to collect once Jon was king. He didn’t. He’d lost his friends long before he’d lost himself. Roger thought he knew why Alex was so desperate to help him, but he didn’t. He helped Roger because it would enable him to have all that he lost out on, even if his friends were dead, his ghosts.
And looking at the Lioness, into her eyes, Alan’s eyes, he knew how little he knew her. For all the resentment he felt for her, and her stupid cat from the Gods, he knew it was because she stood on the top of the world. She had what he wanted, all he had ever wanted and some glory, some renown along with it. But most of all, she had his place with her friends. And so as his life left him, he knew what it was to win. To have your friends beside you, no matter what.

Thanks I am now slightly embarassed. I remembered, when reading the first Alanna, that it was Gary and Alex, but that disappeared to be Gary and Raoul. And there was a conversation with Roger that I never understood in Lioness Rampant, in Chapter 5, when they discover Roger's gift is back, and Alex knows that Roger will know what he wants out of their killing Jon plan, but I don't know what that is. And I also figured his bitterness and rivalry with Alanna had to come from somewhere

I like your thoughts on the nature of Alex's grudge towards Alanna. A convincing explanation of his motives.

I like how you describe Alex's subtle shift from being one of the incrowd to an outsider. Stupid boys - they need to learn how to talk things out.

This is just so sad - I feel so sorry for Alex, despite all his villainy.
