Title: Inversion
Rating: G

He doesn’t cry, no matter what they do to him, because he thinks the Lion didn’t cry, and neither will he. They laugh at his looks, call him Joreena, and he ignores them. He longs to hit them, to fight them, but he remembers the Code of Chivalry and what the Lion has said of a time long ago when men were knights.
So what if he isn’t as nimble now? He’ll keep up with the girls, somehow. And he’s strong. Stronger. But that does nothing when they dart about him, quick and acrobatic, on the practice courts.
A hand shoves him on the back. “Watch yourself, Probationer,” She sneers at him. “Your precious Lion was a cheat. Everyone knows boys can’t be knights.”
He says nothing, kicks her repeatedly to make her let him go. Keladry releases him, curling her lip in contempt. He is nothing to her, her eyes say. She will break him, make him leave, crying like the boy he is.
He is above this. He will be a knight.
Joren turns his back to her and walks away, wooden practice sword at his side. A knight does not lose his temper. A knight will not strike back at the unarmed. A knight only defends the weak and innocent. A knight is no bully.
He goes to practice once more. His blade dances in slashes and cuts and he loses himself in the opulent emptiness, dreaming of a world where boys can be knights too.
