“It’s been far too long since we last saw one another,” Wyldon said to Ilane, his eyes steadfast on Keladry as she lay asleep in her bed. He knew she’d been whisked away by her mother, but he hadn’t been prepared to see her at the girl’s bedside.
“Nearly fifteen years.” Her voice was rich and low. “The tournament in Naxen. I’m sure you recall.”
The words lay heavily between them. “I was hoping you would come for the small exams these last three years.”
“It’s hard to get away from my duties. Even though Piers is no longer the ambassador, we’ve both been occupied with the marriage contract.” She smoothed her daughter’s hair with a loving hand. “We couldn’t miss this one, though.”
“I am sorry I let this happen.” He moved his gaze from child to mother. Her eyes were on his.
“You would’ve stopped it, had you known,” she replied. “Kel is like you in many ways, you know. So determined; so strong.”
“I’m learning that she is,” he agreed. “You have many reasons to be proud of her. She has your spirit.”
“And my sense of humor. And height. But she has her father’s drive, as well has his martial skills.”
Wyldon blinked, confused. He’d never, in all of his life, seen Piers of Mindelan with a weapon. Could Ilane possibly mean—? Fifteen years, after all...
“She was born nine months after the Naxen tournament. Had you never once considered that she could be yours?”
