Title: Blossoms Rating: PG Word Count: 56 Summary: Shinkokami sends a small token of her affection in her letters.
The letters from home are his only real solace, where he is (stuck here, while men younger than he is die on the battlefield in spades), and when Shinkokami's letters arrive, every one contains a dried blossom as a token of her affection; he keeps each one in a box on the desk, as a reminder.

It's great to see a view away from mainstream Tortall. Great sentence!

Nice combo of Roald's anger and Shinko's affection.

Verasque: Minor characters are my thing, eh? @anilover: Yep. Roald is not a happy camper stuck up there doing nothing and Shinko can't do anything for him. @rachy: Thanks.

@chris: The Japanese of one era (don't remember which, but it's three am, I think I'm forgiven) did leave blossoms for the person of interest to find as a means of showing affection, which is where I got this idea. I love Roald and Shinko and I like tinkering with their relationship - thanks! renegade: I know, right? I mean, Jon got to march off to war in Tusaine, yet Roald gets a new nursemaid and gets to keep a seat warm at headquarters. (There's some logic to this somewhere, but Roald complains using the above argument).

That makes it even cooler. They're such an interesting couple, and I love how you write them.

I really love the way Shinko and Roald try to communicate and she tries, silently, to make him feel better. And the ambiguity over her success is wonderful.

Thanks, minuit. @chris: Roald and Shinko's potential isn't explored nearly enough - there's so much potential for "aww, cute!" and "culture shock!" and "we totally misunderstood each other!" That's why I like them. Seek: The cultural barriers - Roald comes from a society that's much more open and not nearly as subtle as it is in Yaman - make for an interesting dynamic. They don't, in my head, communicate very well early on, because Roald isn't seeing what Shinko's trying to tell him - he's not looking for it - and Shinko feels slighted because he isn't noticing. And, of course, thank you. @

queenscovegirl: Unfortunately, Kel/Roald is not my thing, but I'm glad you liked it.
