In the darkness of the male trainees’ dorm, a boy tossed and turned in his sleep. His face worked and twisted with pain-fear-relief-anger, he moved his hands as if they hurt, and he didn’t cry out.
But Farant and Evin, silently watching his nightmares by the dim light of Padraig’s Gift, could see Dren was screaming inside.
Curled up, hidden in a corner of the stables, a girl slept. Her eyes danced behind the thin skin of her eyelids, eyelashes fluttering, searching for trouble. She was curled in on herself and deathly still, tucked into a neat ball as if trying to protect herself from the world- or the world from her.
When Miri got up in the morning and went down to the stables, she found Daine still there, unmoving and deeply asleep- but when she touched Daine’s shoulder to wake her, the girl woke immediately and shrank away.
