Wow! It’s hard to believe its March 2010 already – it seems like New Years Day was only yesterday! Lots of stuff has already happened on Goldenlake – and there is even more to come!
Staff
Goldenlake’s most notable staff change in 2010 has been the appointment of Minuit and Wordy as Giantkiller Co-Editors. And what a marvellous job they’ve done on their first issue! Good work ladies - I (and the rest of the board) look forward to the issues to come.
I would also like to congratulate Journeycat on her appointment as a moderator for the Malorie’s Peak Prompts and Tortall Fanfiction forums. Starting March 1, she will also be stepping up as an Events Director and helping me coordinate coming Events and Competitions on Goldenlake!
Events
It’s hard to believe, but we’ve reached the halfway mark for SMACKDOWN – and what an epic success the competition has been so far! 1221 stories were generated from Round One alone. Rounds Two onwards start March 1 – I wish our eight remaining competitors (Alanna, Buri, Dom, Faleron, Owen, Raoul, Sabine, and Vania) and all their supporters the best of luck!
Keeping in the SMACKDOWN theme is One Night Stand Weekend on April 2 to 4. The weekend is a chance to post all that Kel fic you didn’t get to post during SMACKDOWN, for whatever reason (such as your character not making the SMACKDOWN cut, or losing our early in the competition).
Also in early April is Goldenlake’s First Birthday! Our official birthday is April 1 but we’ve extended it into a week-long event so that everyone can post birthday fic and wishes and generally celebrate us making it to the one year mark!
New to our calendar is the Monthly Group Chat on the first Sunday of every month. Dates for the coming months are March 7, April 4, May 2 and June 6! Check out the announcement posts closer to the date for the start time in your local time zone.
Other events coming up include Alternate Universe Week on April 19 to 24, and the return of the Goldenlake Drabble Tournament on May 1 to 30! Keep an eye out for details closer to the starting dates.
Projects
Most of you now know that our fanfiction archiving project, The Kings Own (www.thekingsown.org) is back up and running (with a shiny new server!). At the time of press, TKO had reached 663,371 words and 764 stories. I encourage everyone to post their fic up, new or old, and encourage your friends to do the same! A special nod goes to Rosie, who has helped push TKO over its 300,000, 400,000, 500,000 and 600,000 milestones! I’m hoping that by my next ‘From Admin’, we’ll have hit the million words mark - we can do it guys!!!
If you’re in need of some inspiration, or want to challenge yourself, why not check out Malorie’s Peak Prompts? New prompts go up every second Friday and there is a list of old ones in the forum. I recommend every writer check it for some awesome ideas, and every reader check it out for some great fic!
Last on Projects is our Wiki! The Goldenlake Tamora Pierce Wiki team are doing a wonderful job (wiki can be found here). To help them out, we’re holding a Wiki Week in June and going on an article drive. I encourage you to get involved and join a team closer to the date.
Giantkiller
Most of you will know that is our FOURTH issue of Giantkiller, and our first completion of a full cycle of the fanzine! I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to our issues so far – there is no way GK could have done it without you!! We have grown from a team of six for our March 2009 issue to a team of eleven for this issue – and hopefully we’ll keep growing!
I would like to finally note that this issue marks the completion of a full four-issue contributor cycle for Rosie, Isha and myself! Keep an eye out for the nifty badges we’ll be sporting on our signatures. I’m hoping next month to be able to congratulate even more contributors as they mark their fourth issue with GK!
Best of luck, and see you about the board!
