I can't really say that fanfic has ever really inspired me, but making covers for fanfic sounds like an excellent idea. I might try that sometime...

I like doing them because it's a different sort of challenge, and you have different dimensions to play with.

I've had people do fan-art for me (both serious and "omake" - joke illustrations based on twisting a scene into something funny), but I've never thought of covers.
