Title: Should've Kept Reading
Rating: PG
Summary: Vania thinks Thom spends too much time reading, and Alanna gets a nasty surprise.
A/N: This one's for Kat. (Sorry about the general lameness, it's 2.30am )
WARNING: Incest.
“You’re always reading.”
Thom looked up at the youngest princess. “Not always. But I’m a university student, I’m expected to.”
Vania shoved the book aside and sat herself on the desk in front of him. “You read too much.” She picked up the book and looked at the title. “Boring,” she announced, and tucked it behind her.
Thom grinned at her. “You mean you want to make sure you’re the centre of attention.”
“No,” she said, and wriggled off the desk and onto his lap. “That would imply that at some stage, I wasn’t the centre of attention.”
He blinked. “Nia, what are you doing?”
“I’ve decided you need a woman in your life.”
“You’re not joining your mother in matchmaking, are you?”
“Thom, shut up.” She kissed him.
“Oh,” he managed when she pulled away. “I see. I…misunderstood your intent.”
“My intent? You haven’t seen anything of my intent yet.”
“Was that not it?” he asked, looking disappointed.
Vania just laughed.

Alanna wiped her forehead on her sleeve after the climb up the rickety stairs in the heat and pushed open the door. She knew there was no use in waiting; Thom never heard anything when he had his nose buried in a book. As usual, his rooms were a mess of books and papers. “One of these days, you’re going to trip over all these piles and hurt yourself,” she called. She heard a gasp and a flurry of movement coming from the bedroom.
“Ma?” came Thom’s voice.
“It’s me,” she called back. “Are you doing experiments?” She could hear some footsteps now, and the sound of a door closing.
“Um,” came Thom’s voice.
“Oh,” she said, as she reached the open doorway. Her blushing son had hastily wrapped a sheet around his waist to cover himself, and there was part of a sheet sticking out of the closet. “I thought you’d be studying.”
“I was. But then, um…”
“Did you make sure she has a pregnancy charm?”
“Of course, Ma. Don’t you remember giving me all those spare ones ‘just in case’?”
“Mmm,” she answered, her thoughts now focusing on the closet. Thom would never forgive her if she went over and opened it herself, but surely he wouldn’t notice if she gave it a little nudge with her Gift.
There was a muffled squeak from the closet, and then Vania came tumbling out, entangled in the sheet she’d grabbed. Alanna stared.
“Hi, Aunty Alanna,” said Vania, and grinned as though this wasn’t the most awkward moment of her entire life.
“Ma?” asked Thom. Alanna had sat herself down hastily, her face gone white.
“How long has this been going on for?” she asked.
“Just this afternoon.”
“You have to stop, this can’t go on any longer.”
Thom frowned. “Ma, it’s not any of your business what Vania and I choose to do.”
“It’s none of Father’s business either,” added Vania. “I don’t care what he thinks I should do.”
“Actually…it is our business,” replied Alanna with a sigh. She scratched her forehead. “We’d hoped we’d never have to tell you, but you’re brother and sister. Half brother and sister.”
Vania stared at her. “What?”
“What she means is that one of us has been lied to about one of our parents since the day we were born.”
Alanna looked at her son, her eyes full of sadness. “We’ve never loved you any less because of it.”
“You mean that my father is Thom’s father too? And not Uncle George?”
The Lioness nodded, her violet eyes still fixed on Thom. “I understand if you’re angry at me. At us.”
“I take it I was a mistake then.”
His mother flinched. “Technically, yes. But you’re also an illegitimate Royal child. You add security for Tortall, something that we need to know we have after the trouble caused by Roger. If the entire Royal family was wiped out, you’d be King.”
“I’d rather be alive,” commented Vania.
“I’d rather you were too,” Thom told her. “I like just being Thom of Pirate’s Swoop.” He scratched his head and sighed. “I should’ve just kept on reading.”
