Title: Writer's Choice
Rating: G
Summary: Wyldon has a big decision to make.
A/N: This was supposed to be a drabble. Stupid brain, stop giving me so many words. I want to write a drabble one day.
********
Kelandry of Mindelan. The three words that had often tormented him this year past. And now it was time to make his choice. This letter would decide the girl’s future. He lifted his quill and slowly began to write.
Baron Piers and Ilane of Mindelan.
The letters came slowly, his mind flicking over the time that had passed since he had accepted her into training. His hand came to a complete stop. Could he do this? Could he throw her dreams to the ground and crush them personally? This was his choice; no one would dispute his decision.
I regret to inform you that your daughter, Kelandry…
That what? That your daughter has shown skill far beyond that of many of her year mates but I cannot accept her due to her gender? Was that what he had reduced himself to? Ignoring the skills and potential to satisfy his beliefs. But a girl could never be a true knight.
has failed to meet the standards set to allow her to continue her page training beyond the end of her probation year…
Had she? Her classroom teachers reported that she was an eager student and was able to quieten even Queenscove in a debate. On the courts her skills were equal to those of her peers in many areas, in some she matched second and third year pages. She was the only page he knew that trained with weighted weapons, despite his unwanted addition to her first lance and Stone Mountain ensuring she took it. She had taken everything he had thrown at her with determination and her blank face.
No. He could not destroy this girl who fought so hard for that which should be hers. If she would not leave, he could not make her. None would call him honourable if they knew the things he had done to try and break her. The king’s disapproval shone clear in his eyes, though he said nothing. Would say nothing. But Wyldon would not allow himself to become a disgrace.
In a sudden flurry of movement he snatched the half written letter from his desk, shoved himself away and threw the ball of paper into the bin. Caught up in his sudden fury- for himself, for the king who had forced this decision on him, for the girl who made it so hard- he grabbed a new sheet of paper and slapped it onto the hard wood of the desk. With short, fast strokes he scrawled out a new message to the Baron of Mindelan. With a final scratch, he signed his name and called the messenger to deliver it.
The next day, the final day of page training, he called her up to give her the news. His hand was bruised from his show of temper yesterday. Something he would never do again but would never forget. Must never forget. As he spoke to her, he dug his nails into the bruise. Reminding himself why this girl had to stay. And when he saw the elation in her face, the surprise she tried to hide, he knew this was the right decision.
