Title: Moving Too Slow
Rating: PG13. (Erring on the side of caution)
Genre: A/U
Warnings: Character Death
Summary: Sandry /Briar showdown. And then some. I don't know what to say.
A/N: The idea of a series of these is now imprinted on my brain. Sadly you may have to suffer through more. And yes, I know. The title and summary suck. I can't help it.

The patter of rain on the cobblestones alerted Sandrilene fa Toren to the fact that something was wrong. It never rained in the courtyard. Tris made sure of that. And even now the sun was lending a glow to the polished wood of her loom. She rose, dress swishing around her knees in a swirl of turquoise, and hurried out the door. Daja’s room she passed without a glance. The smith mage's room was deserted; its usual occupant long dead.
The twisting staircase brought her to the ground where she paused to get her bearings. Left was the entrance to the kitchen and from there, the courtyard. Her soft shoes made a quiet thump on the stone floor as Sandry made her way through the empty kitchen- she still didn’t know what had happened to Gorse and his helpers- and outside.
The sight that met her eyes made her freeze. She had taken too long to make her move.
Tris was the source of the unexpected rain. She was standing in the garden that had been dug against the outer wall of Discipline. Standing being the definitive word. The vines that could usually be seen making their way up the wall were now twining themselves around her arms, shoulders and up her neck to wrap around her face, cutting off her air supply. The plants in the ground had shot up to hold her legs and body in place as Tris was slowly smothered. Obviously the rain had been a last ditch
attempt to attract help.
As Sandry watched, the plants retreated, letting the body drop. Finally, she thought to herself. Briar stepped out from behind Tris, framed by the flickering light of the signal fire behind him, and caught sight of her. Immediately the vines whipped up again and nearly tore themselves out of the ground to grab the noble.
But she had been expecting the attack and before the plants could reach her, Briar’s clothing turned against him. His sleeves writhed and rewove themselves into ribbons, binding his hands and ankles and causing him to drop to his knees. The plants dropped with him and Sandry allowed herself to feel a moment of satisfaction before gesturing and sending the bound boy backwards into the signal fire. The single shout that came from the boy was extremely quiet and Sandry ignored it as she felt the boy’s power flow into her. She had other things to do, namely find Lark and Frostpine. After them, she would deal with Crane, Niko and Rosethorn. Those three would be extremely hard to defeat.
A movement made her spin, but not fast enough. She caught a glimpse of her former teacher before the sheer window curtain wrapped around her. The shadows indicated that the bushy bearded smith had joined Lark and that was the last thing Sandry saw before a large shadowy block crashed into her.
*************
The screen flashed and the words Game Over, Sandri01. appeared. This was followed by a list of scores and names. Jamie sighed and clicked the New Game button. At least she hadn’t come last and she had a new high score. Not bad considering by the time she had entered the game, all the good characters had been taken. Next time she wanted Rosethorn. Now that was some serious power.
The teenager shifted in her chair to await other players. Eventually she would win this game.
