Another agree on Aly/Taybur, reading I never saw anything that made me want them as a pairing. I liked especially their early discussions/battles of wits.
Count me in for another in the minority of not hating Aly, her books are two of my most regularly read of the Tortall books. I like the lack of build up in them, I think we know enough about her family (both extended and genetic) to know where her skills were developed.
I do agree with those who have said the Darkings made things too easy for her in the second book (but that's not necessarily a bad thing, I love the Darkings, I fear I squeaked when they arrived!).

Thinking about it, I guess I should have been clearer. It was a flirtation. But more banter would have been nice. I think Nawat is like "first guy wins". The crow thing is still a bit squicky though.
I don't hate Aly though. Hate is a very strong word. I just think her character didn't um, suffer, as much as the others.
Darkings are so cute though.

I actually agree with everyone that "hate" is too strong for what I feel toward Aly - I think her story is the weakest and her character the most problematic of the Tortall series, but I don't hate her, and I don't begrudge people who like her.
This is why I wished we'd seen more of Aly's Other Boyfriends - even starting the story-time up a week earlier, to let us see her carousing and flirting her way through Corus for ten or twenty pages. (And because there must be give in all things: that would have made some of the superfluous description go away.)

I quite liked Aly- not as much as some of TP's other heroines, though I felt her story didn't quite live up to potential. I do think she got things a bit too easy- I would've liked to see her fail more, or more internal struggle where she has to deal with the consequences. I also didn't buy Aly/Nawat- I felt it went too fast, and I didn't think TQ should have ended with them married and her pregnant. I think part of her cocky attitude comes from being a noble- and all the powerful and important people she's used to being around. I don't love Aly, but I think she's alright.
