Now I realize that wikipedia is not the most reliable source, but I couldn't help but wonder when I came across this on the Tamora Pierce Page.
Can anyone confirm this? Tamora Pierce's website hasn't made the change.
Now I know that there was a fort named Mastiff in POTS. Does this has any relevance to the renaming of the Elkhound? Can anybody see any logic in it that I fail to see? (Which is very likely, I might add.)

Moving this to Up & Coming ETA: 8. Based on what you’ve revealed about the plot of Mastiff so far - is King Roger going to make an appearance?

(possibly marketing didn't want two books with "hound" in the title with the third as an odd man out? (so, say, foxhound/bloodhound/elkhound would've been a go but terrier/bloodhound/elkhound wouldn't so we get terrier/bloodhound/mastiff)).

I saw that the other day I was wondering where they got that too.

I believe I read something awhile back stating the name change was because most people do not know what an elkhound is. Perhaps it was on Tammy's LJ, but I cannot seem to remember...

I've made quite a few edits to the wiki page recently, all of the info has come directly from Tammy from one source or another. The change to Mastiff I noticed on her blog - even though she hasn't publicly written about it. A comment on one of the blog entries from someone who'd been to a reading mentioned why it was changed, but I couldn't track it down when I did the edit. The only place it's been changed on her website is on the biblo page: www.tamora-pierce.com/books.htmAlso, Mastiff will be out in 2010 now, not 2011 - her publishers wanted her to finish the Beka Cooper books first, before moving onto other works. After Mastiff will come the (still untitled) Yanjing book. Hope that helps.

I can understand changing Elkhound to Mastiff. In Terrier, Beka plays the role of a terrier - she ferrets the bad guys from their hole and clamps her mouth on them, shaking till they die and never losing her grip. In Bloodhound, she has to sniff something out and follow a trail (and has a scent hound) The mastiff is a loyal guard dog, while the elkhound is a tracking dog that corners the moose and barks until the hunters make the kill. My guess is that Tammy took a paradigm shift with Beka's plot and purpose.

Yup, that was basically the reason behind the change. Should have mentioned that in my previous.
It seems it was changed in the first half of last year. This is the comment from her journal post where the 'Mastiff' tag first appeared. The comment is from someone who went to a reading and Q&A of hers last July:

Hmm.. I'm excited that the PD series will be finished next year (!!!) but disappointed the Yanjing book won't be out for awhile. I'm looking forward to seeing how Tammy handles such dark themes in her usual 12+ age group!

I'm glad Mastiff is coming out early but I'm sad because I don't read the Emelan books and It'll be soooo long until Numair or Maura's books come out.

Emelan really is an excellent series, and it is worth a read - the worldbuilding is much more cohesive and the characters are really charming as long as you don't go in thinking you're going to get more Tortall and then ... not getting more Tortall.

I just went on Tammy's website, because I remember her summary of "Mastiff" was that the heir to the thrown is kidnapped and Beka's involved in hunting down where the kidnappers are. It mentioned that Beka will be moving all across Tortall trying to find the heir. (and would be EXCELLENT Beka meets nobles fun - maybe she'll need Sabine to translate?) But that summary has been removed. Change of plot or does she not want to reveal so much information?

It's interesting that she took down the summary. That's one of the problems with telling others about a plot of a story in the making. Sometimes it gets to a point where it feels as if there's no point in continuing since everybody knows the story anyway. Though I doubt that's the case with Mastiff. Maybe something happened during the drafts/rewriting of Bloodhound that would change the plot of Mastiff? I'm going to keep my eye out for any developments in the Royal Family during Bloodhound then.

I'd love it to still include the Contes - I'm fascinated with them - although it seems from what Tammy's said on Sheroes that this Roger isn't a good king as much as just obsessed with his wife.
When is she going to write a philandering, cheating man who is a brilliant king? Sigh.

It still says that: In MASTIFF (Random House hardcover, Fall 2010; paperback Fall 2011), Beka and her friends will face their greatest and most important challenge ever when the young heir to the kingdom vanishes. They will be sent out of Corus on a trail that appears and disappears, following a twisting road throughout Tortall. It will be her greatest Hunt—if she can survive the very powerful people who do not want her to succeed in her goal.

I doubt that as well - "Heir to the throne is kidnapped" is in the vein of a hundred or more other action movies/political thrillers (the ever-favored "President's kid is kidnapped" plot) - it's as "Alanna Goes to the Convent" is to the ficworld.
