Title: Realization
Rating: G
Prompt: 7. no longer burdened by what’s left behind
Summary: Tris finds herself even in a faraway place.
Tris couldn't pinpoint the exact time when it hit her, but I creeped up along and through her veins and attacked when she least expected it.
Tris and Evvy were on there way to Landreg to fix the bridges and rivers.
"So, when are you going to publicly show your relationship?" Evvy inquires.
"With who?" Tris radiates innocence.
"You're not fooling me." Evvy says.
"You're still a young child and shouldn't be thinking about that stuff, especially something that's not your affairs."
"I'm not a 'young child', and it is my affairs! You've been moping every second of this uncomfortable ride and I'm -"
"What?" Tris interrupts. "When have I been moping? I haven't -" Tris stops short remembering that she hadn't tried to make conversation much less keep the rain off of her and Evvy.
Why is that? Tris wonders in her head. You know that very well, Tris. You ran away from the best thing that's happened to you in a while.
Tris coughs, suddenly unable to breath. A cold hand gripped her heart and wouldn't let go. A cold wave of fear drowned her, bringing tears to her eyes.
Evvy smirks. "Tris, I'm not a baby, I can handle it if you don't want to talk."
Tris glances at Evvy, her eyes red streaked, a look of panic in her whole demeanor. "No, it's just I -" Tris bent over her horse trying to swallow the bile in the back of her mouth. Fear built up into a knot inside Tris, she choked again, but couldn't get anything out. She retched until her throat became hoarse and dry. Evvy stares at Tris confused, all Tris could do was smile weakly.
--
Tris's heart soars. They made it! The empress didn't kill them! Tris chuckles at herself only to stop short. What if Franzen hates her? If he's angry that she shouted at him? What if he found someone prettier, slimmer... Tris quickly banishes those thoughts as she and Evvy started working on the sides of the rivers. Tris pushed away the river with her mind, while Evvy rearranged the rocks at the sides and made them even stronger so they might not break for another lifetime.
"Thank you so much, Tris and Evvy!" cries Sandry as she led them into Ambros's house. They smile gladly, all that work took them a few hours, they were exhausted to say the least.
They ate a delicious meal of rolls and eggplant and tomato cream soup, and a dessert of nut stuffed pastries drizzled with honey. After that, the two took a steaming shower, then slept soundlessly in the guest quarters.
Tris awoke, something felt very wrong. Legs fine, arms fine... Tris mentally checks off. She's been doing it every morning since she nearly lost them in Namorn.
Everything felt okay, but... Tris laughs with glee.
She slept well that night, not one nightmare that deprived her of her slumber. "It's over." Tris whispered repeatedly only to keep her from forgetting and going back to those miserable days.
