Title: Something Different
Rating: PG
Length: 527 words
Summary: Rizu notices something different about Caidy.
Notes: Rizu/Caidy. Not quite sure how that happened, or how it goes.
She’s different, to begin with. Different to the other Court ladies in her acquaintance, brighter, funnier, wickeder then the others. At first she thinks that maybe it’s because she knows the pull of Sandrilene and Tris and Briar and well, Daja, and the need to integrate herself with them.
She thinks maybe it’s just that. But then she finds herself admiring the way her curls fall against her neck, the shape of her lips when she pouts in disappointment, the way her dresses hug along her curves. She finds herself, when tailoring dresses to fit Berenene’s impeccable frame, daydreaming of how Caidy would look in the dress instead, of whether the colour would flatter her skin, golden from the summer sunshine, or whether it would brighten her eyes and hug her frame as sensually as it did for Berenene.
It’s the last ball of the summer when something just shifts. She sees Caidy laugh, her cheeks flushed with pleasure and wine, and remembers that Daja’s laugh was just the same, sweetness and amusement blended together. She looks at Caidy, standing with Berenene, and thinks that the noblewoman easily holds a large candle to the Empress, in a subtly different way. She tries to keep calm when Caidy comes over, a smile sparkling across her face. She links her arm with hers, and they walk around the room, laughing and talking, until she stops in a darkened corner.
“You look beautiful tonight, Rizu.” Caidy’s voice is soft, and she has a soft smile gracing her face. She doesn’t think her dress is anything special by anyone’s standing, apart from it being tailored to perfection, but she appreciates the compliment just the same.
“Not as beautiful as you.” She laughs softly. Caidy smiles quickly back, and a quick worried look passes over her face. Before she realises quite what has happened, Caidy’s hand has grasped her elbow and her lips have brushed gently over hers. She blinks, startled, and Caidy looks worriedly back at her.
“I thought I’d given you enough time, by now.” She swallows, and Rizu finds herself doing the same.
“But…. Jak. And Finlach. And Briar.” She stammers, hoping her face is not as flushed as it feels. Caidy looks away.
“I’m not, not well exclusive, like that.” She whispers, a flush staining her cheeks. “Does that bother you?”
“No.” Rizu whispers back, just as quietly. “It doesn’t. I just, don’t quite understand why you would be well, interested in me when there are so many others.”
Caidy kisses her again, tracing her lower lip and causing her to gasp softly, sliding a hand around Caidy’s waist and kissing her back in response. Caidy kisses her cheek, and whispers softly in her ear, tugging her hand and leading her out of the hall.
It was different, to be the one following and not leading, different to want and desire an overeager hope and be wanted and desired in return, different to have someone and know that you meant more to them then someone else. Smiling as Caidy’s lips slid down her neck, and she fiddled with her dress lacings, she knew it wasn’t a bad thing.
