She always pulled ahead somehow.
It was a bitter brew to swallow. Once, his house was prestigious and favored by kings, but that was conveniently easy to forget when one foolish whore ruined it all. Bearing that name now was as much a curse as it was a burden. But her house—what did they ever do but win Jonathan a barbarian bride for his son? They were not as old as his, their history was not as profound. The ink was still wet in the noble Book.
There was a time when, in moments of weakness and even loneliness, he had imagined they were on even footing. After all, he was entitled to far more than for what he settled. Applying for a position as man-at-arms was humiliating, degrading. It was only his lord Raoul who rescued him from that, no matter that he was a simple standard-bearer. Her lot wasn’t so different when it came down to it. No one wanted her, either, but Raoul took her in as well. She was as much a target as he, a boy from a disgraced house. Outcasts, both of them.
And then she had to go and get herself knighted, and suddenly she was somebody. The other men were proud of her even if they tried to hide it. The glow on Raoul’s face practically made him sick with a seething envy he had not known before.
No matter how hard he tried, Lerant could not catch up to her.
