Title: A Sunday Smile Rating: G Summary: Written for the 31_days challenge. Prompt: #8 - Too much love will kill you in the end. Theme: Tris.
“You can have it,” said Niko, placing the book in her hands and looking down at her. “I’ve practically memorised the contents anyway.”
Tris took the book and ran her fingers over the cover and up the spine. The stamped lettering on the front cover shone silver in the fading afternoon light. She looked up at Niko with a wistful turn of her lips. “I can’t take this, Niko. It must be expensive, and you’ve already given me too many books.”
He shook his head with a smile, straightening the cuffs of his shirt with spidery fingers and avoiding her sharp eyes. “Just take it, Tris. You need to learn how to accept a gift.”
After he left, she flipped through the pages, breathing in their wonderful scent. He really did give her too many books, but she wouldn’t give them back for the world. Hugging the book to her chest, she turned and walked upstairs to add it to her collection.

Aw I like this Tris. I like that she is quietly grateful, and that she and Niko are all about the don't-look-at-me-I'm-giving-you-a-gift. I certainly like little hints of Niko's character - "I've practically memorised the contents anyway" - because they make up such a lovely picture!
