Title: Push Rating: PG Length: 180 Prompt: 31_days 3: Is it a groove or is it a rut? Summary: Words unsaid built up in said things hardly meant.
The motion was small, repetitive. The sound was not quite a rip, not skin being torn from flesh, but as it hit the bowl beside her it did not quite ring and it did not quite drip into the new surface.
“Do you have to do that now?”
Daja looked up from her hand, a runnel of brass caught between thumb and forefinger. “It bothers you?”
The surprise in her voice surprised both of them.
“It’s…unsettling,” Polyam managed. “There’s a noise.”
“There is?” Daja’s head was tilted to the side. “I’d never listened for it.”
“Perhaps you should.”
“Polyam?”
Polyam sighed. Daja crossed her arms over her chest, the brass-palmed hand slightly curled.
“Enough,” Daja said, with the same steady, infuriating patience that she applied to picking and pouring herself into a small bowl. “I’m here, if you want to say something to me.”
“I don’t know!” The words were louder than she intended. Daja only blinked.
“Yes,” she said. She peeled off a shining streak of flesh, examined it closely, and let it drop, watching Polyam wince. “You do.”

Ah! I honestly cannot find the right words to say what I want to about this one! It's just captured something, something that is definitely worth capturing, and capturing well (like you've done!). Fantastic fic.

I like that Daja's patience is infuriating. I think I'd probably feel the same way, were I feeling as tetchy as Polyam is in this scene.
