Reading A:tfA for bookclub, I noticed that there are several instances where Roger seems to use something similar to what Numair does to Kel unconsciouslly, and what Blayce tries to do to Kel before she kills him.
Roger, like Numair seems to need no accessory to cast such a spell, although he is fiddling with his rod in the instance he tries with Alanna, when testing her for her Gift. The other time would be when he 'dares' Jonathan to go to the Black City So, is it the same, is it not? Am I just seeing things that aren't there? Thoughts?

Okay, I'm going to start talking about things that I'm not an expert about, so if anyone sees a mistake in what I say, point it out!
To be guilty of a crime (and Roger coercing Jon has to be a crime) you need two things. The first is the actus reus, or the actual action, which both Numair and Roger have. But you also need the mens rea, a guilty mind.
For me the difference is right there. Roger had the guilty mind, but for Numair it was a subconscious act, as you said.
Did that go right over your head?

Roger was fiddling with a jewel when he dared Jon to go. Also I think Numair might be more powerful than Roger and even so fiddling with a gem might enhance the strength the spell like others.
Also Numair was really tired when that happened and WHEN do we see Roger other than perfectly groomed and wide awake in his first life.

I think they both require something shiny - if you remember, Kel was rather caught by Numair's eyes. It could be that Roger consciously channeled his power through the object because of his intent, while Numair was being intense and accidently channeled that intensity threw his own (shiny) eyes.
Or something.

Or something. I wonder if the shiny was to attract attention, or to facilitate the use of magic. Maybe both?

Well, we know opals are very shiny, and good conductors of magic. So I imagine it's a bit of both.
